Vakbrug — Mission, Vision, and Policy Framework

Mission

Vakbrug exists to close the gap between people with trade skills in Suriname — students, tradeskilled workers, contractors, business owners, and project developers — and the opportunities, training, and recognition they need to build a career. Vakbrug is the bridge, not the authority: for education and training matters, Suriname's Ministry of Education, Science and Culture is the ultimate authorizing body; for employment and labor matters, the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Youth Affairs is the ultimate authorizing body; for business and employer-facing matters, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation is the ultimate authorizing body. Vakbrug connects stakeholders — applicants, training institutions, employers, and government bodies — to each other, honestly and without claiming an authority that belongs to someone else.

Vision

A Suriname where no one with a trade skill, a willingness to learn, or a business to build is left out of the economy for lack of a path or a connection — where the diaspora who left to study or work abroad have a real way back, where a tradeskilled worker's credentials are fairly seen whether self-reported, spot-checked, or digitally verified, and where the bridge between training, certification, and employment is visible and walkable for everyone, not just those with existing networks.

Why these specific policies — the international reference points

These are the real frameworks Vakbrug's policies below are grounded in, not generic language dressed up as 'internationally accepted':

  • ILO Decent Work Agenda — the International Labour Organization's four strategic pillars: employment, social protection, social dialogue, and rights at work. Vakbrug's self-reported/spot-checked credential model (digital verification is planned, not active) and its 'open to opportunities' applicant privacy design both trace back to the rights-at-work and social-dialogue pillars — workers should be able to seek better opportunities without being punished for it.

  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 8 — Decent Work and Economic Growth: 'Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.' Suriname's own UN country page confirms this goal's direct relevance to the country's development priorities.

    UN Suriname: SDG 8
  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 — Quality Education: ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all — the basis for Vakbrug citing real training pathways and never fabricating a credential source.

  • UNESCO Strategy for TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) 2022–2029 — the current UNESCO framework for recognizing and strengthening vocational/trade education pathways, the basis for treating Vakbrug's pathway-sourcing (SAO, NATIN, SHTTC, etc.) as a credential-pathway function, not a marketing function.

Policies

  1. Bridge, not authority. Vakbrug never represents itself as the issuer or guarantor of a credential, a work permit, or a government authorization. Education-related pathways cite the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture; work/employment-related pathways cite the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Youth Affairs; business and employer-facing matters cite the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation, as the respective ultimate authorizing bodies. Vakbrug's role is to connect, not to certify on the government's behalf.

  2. Honest sourcing, never fabrication. Every training institution, government office, or certification body referenced on Vakbrug is listed with what can actually be verified — a real website when one is confirmed, or name/contact information when it is not — and never with an invented address, phone number, or website. An institution without a confirmed presence is still named, never omitted, so it has the visibility and the opportunity to come forward and complete its own listing.

  3. Self-reported and spot-checked — disclosed honestly. Digital verification is planned, not active. Applicant credentials are labeled by how they were actually established, and that label is visible, not hidden behind a generic 'verified' claim.

  4. No one left behind by category. Vakbrug's pathways are built to serve students, tradeskilled workers, contractors, business owners, and project developers alike, including Suriname's diaspora. Any future paid features are commercial decisions layered on top of this access, never a precondition for an applicant to be found or to see a pathway.

  5. Dignity in employment search. An employed applicant may indicate openness to better opportunities without that status being visible to the public or, critically, to their own current employer's ordinary view of the platform — consistent with the ILO's rights-at-work principle that seeking better terms is not something a worker should be penalized for.

  6. Data stays proportionate. Applicant and company data collected is limited to what the stated purpose requires, is not used beyond matching and verification, and is retained only as long as the platform's own stated policies specify (a retention/deletion policy is still being finalized).
